How to Start Making Real Money Blogging — No Writing Degree Required | Ep. 209
In This Article
Have you ever found yourself reading your favorite blog and wondering, “Could I make money doing this too?” If so, you’re not alone. Many people are curious about whether blogging can truly be a source of real income. The answer is yes, and today, I’m sharing everything you need to know — inspired by my conversation with Chris Myles of Blogger Evolution — to get started, even if you don’t consider yourself a master wordsmith.
Let’s take a closer look at how blogging can become a profitable venture for you.
What Is Website Investing—And Why Should You Care?
First things first: What exactly is website investing? Think of it like building digital real estate. You create a blog, grow its reach and income, and over time, it becomes an appreciating asset. The best part? Blogs that generate monthly income can be sold for 30 to 50 times their monthly earnings. If your blog makes $2,000 a month, you could potentially sell it for between $60,000 and $100,000. It’s not magic—it’s just a smart, scalable business model.
Of course, you don’t have to sell your blog if you love managing it. Many bloggers choose to keep earning the passive, recurring income instead.
How Much Time Does It Realistically Take?
As someone who balances family, work, and life, I know time is your most valuable resource. According to Chris Myles, it generally takes between 12 and 24 months to grow a blog to the point where it earns significant income. Of course, individual cases may vary. For example, he shared a story about a colleague who reached $3,000 in monthly revenue within just 10 months—and that blog could already be sold for six figures.
My advice? Be patient and consistent. A small, steady investment of your time can compound into meaningful results.
Do You Have to Be a Great Writer?
This one is a relief for many: You do not need to be a professional writer to succeed at blogging. What matters most is that your content is helpful, thorough, and answers your readers’ questions better than your competitors. Google prioritizes content that provides genuine value. Detailed how-to guides, actionable advice, and clear explanations will get you much farther than poetic prose.
And if writing isn’t your strong suit, just remember: you can always hire freelance writers or use editing tools to polish your posts once your blog starts earning.
How Much Blog Traffic Is Required to Make Money?
A common myth is that you need tens of thousands of visitors to generate income through blogging. In reality, your monetization strategy matters just as much as your traffic numbers. Here are a few tried-and-true methods:
- Affiliate Marketing: Recommend products, include affiliate links, and earn a commission on resulting sales.
- Display Advertising: Add ads to your blog and get paid based on page views and clicks.
- Consulting and Services: Offer your expertise—whether it’s gardening or budgeting—directly to your audience.
- Brand Partnerships: As your readership grows, brands may pay you to feature their products.
Launching with even a few hundred engaged readers can be enough to get started, especially with affiliate marketing or consulting.
Can You Blog Anonymously?
If privacy is important to you—perhaps you want to keep your blog separate from your day job—you absolutely can blog under an alias or pen name. Many successful blogs operate under brand names or anonymous personas. In fact, anonymous sites are often easier to sell, since they’re less reliant on your personal brand.
How to Increase Your Blog’s Traffic
The most effective way to build blog traffic is by establishing authority in your niche. Here’s how:
- Publish Thorough, High-Quality Content: The more helpful and comprehensive your posts, the more likely readers—and Google—will value them.
- Build Backlinks: When respected websites in your industry link to your content, Google views your site as more trustworthy. Networking and guest posting are excellent ways to achieve this.
Consistency, relationship-building, and a focus on quality are your best strategies for sustained growth.
Find Your Motivating “Why”
Let’s be honest—building a profitable blog takes time and perseverance. If your motivation is simply to make money, it may not be enough to get you through the tough moments. Define why you want to start a blog. For me, empowering others with financial knowledge is my driving force. For Chris, it was about freedom and family. Find your “why”—it will sustain you, even on the challenging days.
Ready to Get Started?
I hope this post has made the idea of making money through blogging more accessible and realistic for you. There are more opportunities in 2024 than ever before to monetize your knowledge and interests online. Start small, be consistent, and remember: you do not have to do everything perfectly from day one.
